It’s common for homeowners to be more invested in the longevity and dependability of their residential roofing than its overall aesthetics. However, there are many structures around the world where a roof is an important ornamental piece of design and architecture.
1. Sydney Opera House – Sydney, Australia
As part of the UNESCO World Heritage List under the World Heritage Convention, this opera house is famous around the world for the shape of its roof. It constitutes a masterpiece of twentieth-century architecture with each precast concrete panel of shells covered by over a million Swedish tiles.
2. Red Tiled Houses of Old Town – Dubrovnik, Croatia
These roofs are fairly new for a 1300-year old settlement. They were made when Dubrovnik was under siege in 1991 and 1992 by Serbian forces, which shelled the Old Town and damaged most of the buildings.
3. Domed Roofs – Santorini, Greece
The famous iconic churches with indigo domed roofs are in Oia and Fira on the island of Santorini, Greece. It can be noted that the color combination of white and blue is thought to reflect the colors of the Greek flag which were banned for 400 years during Ottoman rule. The dome-shaped roof allows strong winds or storm surges to pass over without creating structural pressure.
4. Taj Mahal – Agra, India
Also one of the most iconic places around the world, the Taj Mahal or the “Crown Palace” is an incredible complex of five major structures surrounding the center, which is actually a mausoleum. It took 22 years to build, completed in 1653 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, as a memorial.
5. St. Stephen’s Cathedral – Vienna, Austria
What makes this cathedral distinct and even more beautiful is its roof. The mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna, dating back to the fourteenth century, is covered by 230,000 multicolored, glazed tiles. In addition to geometric patterns, these tiles also form images, including coats of arms and a two-headed eagle.
